In this 90-minutes read, Bruno Loyiso shares vulnerably about his rocky journey as a Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Base leader, and about how he and his leadership team were led to discover a different approach to leadership: a Jesus centred team leadership approach. Readers are invited to glean valuable lessons from the mistakes and victories he and his team experienced while leading in a dynamic, cross-cultural context. While this short book may be an appealing read to leaders whose time is rather scarce, it offers great depth, food for thought and an invitation to prayerfully engage with this "More Desirable Way" of leadership.
Bruno grew up in a Christian home in Switzerland and was named Loyiso by his (now late) Xhosa language teacher, Tata Jacobs. Bruno Loyiso is also a banker, musician, influencer, idealist, teacher, maximiser and dedicated family man. He obtained leadership experience as a youth group leader, orchestra and choir conductor, constable at the Swiss Army Music, pioneering leader of several church and business projects, as well as in his role as a YWAM Base leader for the past 10 years.
Bruno Loyiso has been involved with YWAM Worcester since January 2000. Together with his wife, Judy, he moved to Worcester in 2006, where the couple also became parents to a son and two daughters.
I have known Bruno and his family for the last ten years. The book that you are about to read, "A More Desirable Way", is not fiction; it is a true story of a personal journey and I have had the privilege of witnessing this story as it unfolded.
I would recommend any person aspiring to be a leader, as well as anyone leading a multicultural organization, to have this book by their side.
Bruno's book has impacted my life powerfully. My spirit has longed for "A More Desirable Way" of leadership for a long time.
At the very moment when I was prompted to re-embark on pulling a ministry team together in our region in France, God put me in touch with Bruno!
I was so relieved, comforted and inspired by his journey. God is doing amazing things amongst us as we now dare to put Jesus back in the centre of our team.
Thank you Bruno, and the YWAM Worcester team.
Through my personal experience, after having finished extensive studies in Theology and Missiology and served almost 50 years in full time ministry - many years as the Field Director of YWAM Africa and also in various other leadership roles, I have come to the conclusion that leadership should be an ever evolving dynamic that embraces different cultures and contexts. Leadership should continue to adapt, and this book presents key insights into a leadership approach that is relevant for the future. In his captivating book, Bruno challenges old ideas and presents a leadership approach that promotes expansion and can be adapted to various contexts and cultures. I have seen Bruno live out the principles described in this book, and it is with deep appreciation for his service in YWAM, that I commend this book to you.
I have known Bruno since 2000 when, as a young man, he came from Switzerland to do his Discipleship Training School at YWAM Worcester, where I was leading the Base.
I have always admired Bruno for his willingness to learn, and his ability to glean the most out of his experiences.
This book is case in point. Bruno applied Biblical principles to the challenges he faced as a leader while also navigating the shift in leadership approach that started to emerge in YWAM and other organisations around the world. His experiences and insights are distilled in this book.
I believe this book will be a helpful resource for leaders seeking to transition into team leadership.
In Ephesians 1:23 we read that the church is not only Christ's body, but is also described as the fullness of Him who fills all in all. This is an exalted description, indeed, but it is not given to any individual. This belongs to the body corporately and only in the body can such fullness be found. Bruno's book describes a leadership style that can draw on the whole body and therefore on the richness of this passage. Please read this book with a prayerful attitude and ponder how you can lead in such a way as to reap from the riches of everyone's anointing, insight, understanding, and ability.
